Vampires ~ what if they were for real?

Have any of you read J.R. Ward’s books on vampires; the Black Dagger Brotherhood? If vampires were like these guys; would you consider dating one? And why or why not?

For those of you who have not read Ward’s books - these vampires don’t chase down humans to suck their blood – so that wouldn’t be a problem. These guys are black leather clad, tall, dark, and handsome in a rugged Charles Bronson kind of way with a Sean Connery 007 confidence.

It got me to wondering, WHAT KIND OF A MAN IS REALLY ATTRACTIVE TO WOMEN?

What are we really looking for when we look for a man?

Do we want the romance of a Sir Lancelot, our knight in shining armor? Or the excitement of a James Dean ~ Steve McQueen type bad boys with a wounded heart only we can heal? Or is it the wild sexy kind of guy like an Elvis Presley or Jon Bon Jovi that make our hearts pump with need and desire? Or is it that “vampire” type dangerous guy…that draws you because you never know what to expect?

I wonder, is it the man? Maybe it’s the lifestyle he offers that draws us.

Mayhaps it’s none of the above, but the lifestyle. Could it be; it’s really just the mystique of living by night like a vampire that draws us to certain men? Or financial security that makes a man like Donald Trump sexy? Perhaps it’s just the thrilling lifestyle of the Jet Set kind of man like (Sir) Richard Bransen that gets our blood boiling with passion?

But I wonder. Maybe it’s just a man’s confidence or lack of that draws us or repels us.

There are a lot of us without a dime in our pocket that have found passion and romance with our Mister Right – he’s not a vampire or a sexy spy or an entertainer with a great voice. Nor can our perfect men offer us a trip to Paris for lunch and back to New York in time to get to the Ballet by eight. Some of our guys even hold a nine to fiver…what made him our knight in shining armor, our bad-boy, our sexy wiggle hips, or our leather clad vampire that stirs our blood of desire?

Or does it all boil down to that unexplainable emotion called ~ LOVE?

Doesn’t matter if he’s rich or poor, muscle bound or beer bellied, no job or work-alcoholic, dark or fair haired, young or old, tall or short, human or vampire…we don’t care – it’s the man WE found that matched us perfectly and made our passions flow.

Just wondering what you thought.

Hi Hawk:

Great post as always! As far as Ward's series goes, I've read them all. Um - don't get me started.

As far as your question and the analysis of attraction between people and the "LOVE" emotion, I think it starts out with that spark, the overwhelming sexual attraction that gets the heart pounding and the butterflies flapping in our tummies. But as that wanes, it is committment and work that keeps a relationship together. And, the big C as I call it, commumication. If you don't have that then it's a pretty tough go.

I think that is often the central issue resulting in conflict in a romance novel, communication, until of course the H&H find their HEA.

I love vamps in romance. I always have, there is something dark, sexy, and lethal about them that makes for great romance reading. But that is just for a good fun read. Reality is another kettle of fish altogether.

Happy Reading and Writing Girl!!

OMG - I do love Ward's writing! She can tell a story can't she?

Oh yes, I agree on the big C in a relationship. Got to have that!
So, would you date one of Ward's vamps? Or are they too bad boy for you?

LOL, just wondering?

Hi Hawk:

Hmmmmm Well, I liked the first 3 books in Ward's series very much and I have to say "Lover Eternal", is my favorite. So, of any of them probably Rhage. The last book, Lover Enshrined spoiled the series for me and I'll not read Ward again. I thought it was one of the most poorly written books this year, but that is just me. *shrug*

I much prefer Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series and her vamp "Tegan", is one of my favorites. This "bad boy", reclusive, pensive sort of hero with a sad past who needs the right, special woman to "save" him from himself.

Take Care

Lea,

Dark Lover is my first read of hers - sad to hear Lover Enshrined hit the bottom...hum, now I wonder if I should read it or not.
What was it about that book that spoiled it for you?

Hi Hawk:

I should have said that the book was one of the most poorly written books I've read this year.

And, in answer to your question, the book IMHO lacked a cohesive plot. Unlike the other books in the series the story's plot was not central to the "lovers" being Phury and Cormia. It was a mixture of subplots about the supporting characters she had introduced thus far in the series. And, Phury and Cormia's story got lost in the mess. She turned Phury into the degenerate whining drug addict with this schizoprenic voice in his head called "The Wizard", which I thought was another character at first.

Then she parachuted this character "Lassiter" into the story like he had been part of the plotline all along. It was a very weird reading experience.

The editing was very poor too, did you know there is no vampire "penial" system? There was also this whole text messaging thing that went on, which wasn't explained and hense I had no idea what the dialogue was during that.

However, the book shot up the bestseller lists and received rave reviews from many - so who am I?

If you have the book and let me know what you think. I would love to hear an unbiased opinion. Ms. Ward has legions of dedicated followers out there and it's difficult to have a unemotional discussion about that book.

Hey Lea,

>>I should have said that the book was one of the most poorly written books I've read this year.<<<

That's sad to hear. But I have to blame the publishing business for that - I've seen pro writer friends of mine who work 17 hour days trying to meet deadlines that the pub's pushed up.

It's sad. The readers suffers and so does the writer because pub's push authors to do more than they should in a year. And all because they don't want to gamble on a new writer....
It's a shame, so many talented writers never gets pubbed...and pro writers burn out from overwork. Their art as a writer suffers from the demand and then the readers get burned with the buy...end of a career.

Yap, it sounds like a rushed job. Sad.

What is a penial system?

I don't have it yet.

O.k., I do hope to buy them all and I'll let you know what I think....unemotionally that is.

Hey Hawk:

The "penial" comment was in reference to an editing error. "Penial" is in reference to a penis i.e. penial implant etc.

A "penal" system is in reference to a prison system which in the context of the story is way the term should have been spelled. lol

Don't get me wrong - the first 3 and even the 4th book were good reads. Especially Lover Eternal. If you liked Dark Lover - you will love "Lover Eternal".

Listen, send me your addy and I'll post "Lover Enshrined" to you - my gift. Honest. i_love_my_kiera@yahoo.ca

Lea, if you go back and re-read the last book, you'll be ready for the next seven books. The last one was very face paced with tons of info in it, but it was setting up so much for what's coming.

Okay, I guess you can tell I love JR Wards writing. :) Although I also know the last book was hard.
But give her one more try. I know you'll be glad you did.

That's the thing with writers who are writing a long series. There comes a book which must have too much info in it to connect to the other things coming.

The fact that a word was incorrect happens all the time. I've read best sellers who the line editor missed something or added something by mistake. It happens, it just we as writers see it and it sticks out to us.

I can't imagine the world she's created. To have so much plot going on in your head.

All of that and JR is really a great person.

Hi Hawk,

I love the BDB series! Z is my favorite brother, but I would totally date any of them! I love all of her books, but agree the last book wasn't the best. I can't wait for her next book to come out in May. She is doing a book signing about 3 hours from where I live and I can't wait to meet her again. I think one of the reasons I love her books is that she is such a nice person when you meet her. Plus, she brings the brothers to life.

Vicky -

Very good point.

Liza,

Awesome that you got to meet her. I hope she comes down this way - I'd love to go to a book siging of hers.

OMG - Z? You would want Z! But he hates women? Dark Lover page 28. So you go for the rugged kind of guy, huh?

I liked Tohrment.

Lea and Vicki - you two girls forgot to pick one of the boys.

Vicki said...

Well, you can't pick Wrath, Beth would kick your ass and quick. Since I've read the books I know who's with who and trust me on this, I don't want to mess with any of their Shellon's. Nope. So, at this point the only one I can say is TOR, but I have my thoughts on that as well.

Hmmmm...if I didn't have to worry about any of their woman knowing (are you sure they don't read your blog?)I'd say either V or Butch. And girls, if you're reading the blog, no worries, I know they're yours and I wouldn't even think about it. :) But I'd love to come visit the compound and have a girls day. I mean there is all that eye candy around, right?

Hey Vicki:

I don't know if you will see this post or not, but I meant no offence to Ms. Ward as a person. I'm sure she is lovely. And I liked the first 3 books very much. But I'm sorry, I beg to differ with respect to "Lover Enshrined", it wasn't just one word, there were a number of words that were misspelled and used out of context. But that is beside the point.

Books, just like movies or anything else are subjective for a person and I just didn't care for that book. I didn't care for "Lover Unbound", either but was willing to give the series one more go. But again, that is just me. Heck, there millions out there I'm sure who will continue to follow Ms. Ward's series. I'm just not one of those folks.

All the best to you for the festive season.

Regards

Hey Lea,
Totally understand and of course I was offended, not everyone is going to be fans of everyones writing. :)

I was just hoping it was only the last book which turned it off for you.

If the next one follows closer to the first three I'll let you know. I hoping it does anyway.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday. :)

Ah...Lea ....knowing Vicki as I do, and how she drops words like "The" and "Not", I feel safe in saying as her CP that she meant NOT offended in this last reply. LOL See Vicki, I'm still cp'ing for you....That is what you meant right? That Lea didn't not offend you.
